Aside from new hardwood floors and a few paint touch-ups, our clients’ home in Swampscott, MA—designed by mid-century modern architect Martin Bloom, a Walter Gropius-trained visionary—had remained virtually untouched. Passionate about preserving the original built-ins and modernist finishes, our clients wanted to maintain the home’s integrity while refreshing the service spaces, particularly the kitchen and bathrooms, which were in dire need of an update. Our design approach honored the home’s geometric architectural elements, including the distinctive kitchen enclosure and centrally located fireplace and chimney. We introduced new wallpaper, tile, and stone to complement the existing original wood cabinets and built-ins, resulting in a space that feels lighter, brighter, and more effortlessly modern—while also functioning seamlessly for a contemporary lifestyle.
